Stocking Up For Next Year!

Have you stocked up on your Xmas essentials for next year?

This time of year is a great time to grab the usual Xmas supplies. From Xmas cards and decorations to lights and wrapping paper, many stores are looking to clear these items out of their stores.

Hints to finding the best Xmas deals:

1. Go to stores that are not as busy. Many of these stores are likely to have Xmas extras that they need to clear out of their stores. Generally, Kmart is not as busy as the Wal*Mart and may have a greater selection of inventory with greater discounts.

2. Don't just limit yourself to the Wal*Mart type large box retailers. Smaller stores such as Office Depot and Staples carry xmas supplies. These stores are normally not on most people's lists when it comes to stocking up on xmas essentials. Just like the larger retailers, they also need to clear out their inventory and may offer discounts. Even smaller and local stores may be looking to clear out excess inventory!

Is soda your daily caffeine fix?

Aimee does not enjoy coffee as much as I do, and prefers to obtain her daily dose of caffeine via soft drinks. For the last year or so, we have been looking out for well priced soda. We have several tips that should help you get your soda fix cheaply!

1. Purchase 2-Liter Bottles: I know these are not as convenient as the cans or the bottles, but if you can handle taking your morning soda in a travel mug as opposed to the bottle this will save you money! The two-liter bottles (on a per ounce basis) are the least expensive way the get your cola.

2. Store Brands: To some people purchasing anything but the name brand may be a non-negotiable, but for those who cant tell much of a difference, the store brand of soda may be a viable option. The Wal*Mart brand of Dr. Pepper (aka Dr. Thunder) can be up to $0.70 cheaper compared to it's name brand cousin. Generally, (of course it depends on specific store) the Wal*Mart brand of any form of soda is between $0.66 and $0.77 per two-liter bottle.

3. Stock-up if Under $1.00!: If you can find a sale on the two-liter bottles of soda that makes them 1.00 or less, go ahead and stock up on those products. Aimee and I will purchase five or six two-liter bottles and keep them in the pantry.

4. Take Advantage of Reward Programs: Coca-Cola has a rewards program (www.mycokerewards.com) where you can enter the code on the cap and redeem prizes. If you have to buy soda and if coke is on sale and priced the same as Pepsi we suggest you purchase Coca-Cola products. Aimee and I do not have a taste preference for either Coke or Pepsi, but the rewards program may make Coke a better value.

Redbox or Netflix

For the last two years, we have been an avid fan of Redbox. Every time we would visit a Wal*Mart, Walgreen's, Harris Teeter and wanted a movie, we would simply go to the Redbox machine and pay just a dollar per night of rental (of course the dvd was always returned the next day to avoid additional charges). Coupon codes could even be entered and the dvd would be vended for free.

Recently, we decided to give Netflix a try. We had been thinking of trying Netflix instead of Redbox, but were reluctant to because it would take nine movies on Netflix to equal the $1.00 per movie deal Redbox offered.

After three months of Netflix, I must say it is by far the better deal. In three months, we have seen more movies and TV show episodes than in the previous two years with Redbox. Plus, the convenience of being able to stream to the Wii, the blue-ray player, and the computer is very convenient.

The only downside to Netflix is the lack of reliability of the United States Postal System. I have had two dvds scheduled to show up one day, and did not show up until a week later. By the time I received them, I had already informed Netflix of the issue and received and returned the replacement dvd!

Overall, if you are on the fence on whether to switch from Redbox to Netflix, MAKE THE SWITCH! It is worth it!

Changes to Sheetz Card

Recently, I received an email that the structure to the MySheetzCard Program would change on September 1st. Today, while at Sheetz, I asked one of the Sheetz employees to explain the program. He informed me that as of 9/1/2010, there will no longer be points and rewards will become instant. For those who still have points on their card, they will be rounded up to the nearest discount (.10, .20, or .30) for you to use by the end of the year.

Once those points are used, all MySheetzCard owners will begin receiving .03 off at the pump each time they fill their tank. Additionally, Sheetz will run food and drink (Coffee, sodas, snacks, etc.) promotions open to everyone who holds a MySheetzCard!

Today was our second trip to Harris Teeter during Super Doubles and this time they had all the items that we wanted to purchase. Instead of paying $23.39, we paid only $1.07! This is a savings of 95.4%. This is probably our best savings yet on a coupon shopping trip.

Harris Teeter Savings

First trip for super doubles at Harris Teeter was a success. The items above are normally 57.76, but I was able to get them for 12.96, a savings of 78%! The trip would have been more successful if several items that were free were not sold out during our trip. Hopefully we can try again and get more deals.

On another note, the cashier at the Harris Teeter told us that there was a lady earlier today who spent $20.00 for $115.00 in food! Crazy deals!

Sheetz Success!!!

On a recent trip to the beach, I had the opportunity to fill up at Sheetz and use the discounts on the My Sheetz Rewards Card. Both fill ups occurred at the Mebane Sheetz that had a posted price of 2.45. The discount provided by the email signup discounted the gas price to 1.95, and the second discount on the second fill up brought the price down to 2.35!

Sheetz Deal

So, I am not sure if you have a Sheetz Rewards Card, but I would definitely recommend obtaining one, especially if you ever purchase food or gas from a Sheetz. Points can be earned on gas, food purchases, and coffee purchases. Once you reach a certain level of points, you will receive a discount on gas. This is Sheetz current point earning table.

You BuyYou SpendYour Rewards
Made-To-Order food, coffee, bakery or fountain drinks$1.0035 pts
Bottled beverages, snacks, candy, ice cream and most grocery items$1.0010 pts
Gift Cards from popular retailers and restaurants$1.0010 pts
Gas$1.005 pts

Now you might be wondering how good are the rewards one can earn. Well, if you purchase gas, you can earn up to 30 cents off per gallon! This makes the cost of a 2.49 (9/10) per gallon down to 2.19 (9/10) per gallon! Below is their current reward brackets:

1750 points = 10 cents off per gallon
3500 points = 20 cents off per gallon
5250 points = 30 cents off per gallon

Now for the deal...

Currently, Sheetz is running a promotion for their card members to register online at www.mysheetzcard.com once providing your email and verifying it, they will add 8750 points instantly, which somehow gives a discount of 50 cents per gallon.

Want a FREE Meal???

Chick-fil-a is giving away an entirely free meal! All you have to do is dress up like a cow. If you, like me, do not have a cow costume hanging around in your closet, you can print one out HERE

"Couponing" Websites

Aimee and I began "couponing" about two months ago. It all began on a trip to Harris Teeter on "Triples Week" (a week when Harris Teeter will triple manufacturers coupons up to .99). We had several coupons that we wanted to use in order to get some great deals. While in the store, we noticed several families with a binder full of coupons. Inside of these binders, the coupons were neatly placed in trading card pouches and separated by section. After several minutes of hesitation, I asked one of the ladies with the binder full of coupons about her methods. After 20 minutes of enlightening information and resources, we were hooked. Below are the websites we use to save money!
